About Us
Welcome to Harlem!
Founded by Carolyn D. Johnson, a proud Harlem native and passionate storyteller, we are a boutique tour company that has been celebrating the rich history and vibrant culture of Harlem since 2004. As a locally owned and operated NYC and NY State-certified minority and women-owned business, we take pride in shining a light on Harlem's unique legacy.

At Welcome to Harlem, we immerse you in the essence of this extraordinary neighborhood through unforgettable experiences—music, dance, theater, shopping, dining, and beyond. Whether you're exploring Harlem's landmarks, attending one of our special events, or joining a custom tour, you'll gain a deep appreciation for the area's historical significance and cultural diversity.

We believe Harlem's heartbeat lies in its community, which is why we partner with local businesses, organizations, and artists to offer enriching programs and events. From large group tours to intimate gatherings, no group is too big or small for us. Simply put, we LOVE Harlem and are immensely PROUD of our neighborhood.
Over the years, Carolyn D. Johnson has expanded the ways people connect with Harlem:
-
2010: Co-authored the Harlem Travel Guide with Valerie Jo Bradley, the first of its kind for Harlem tourists.
-
2014: Launched Harlem Jazz Boxx in collaboration with jazz musician Craig Harris and Arts & Education Continuum. This initiative brings live jazz and gospel performances to Harlem at affordable prices, supporting local artists and enriching the community.
-
2020: Created Harlem Roots, an engaging online platform that introduces students to Harlem’s inspiring history through interactive lessons, puzzles, and activities tailored to different reading levels.
-
2021: Designed Harlem-Opoly – Harlem Renaissance Edition, a game celebrating Harlem’s golden age, creativity, and innovation.
Carolyn’s dedication to Harlem is deeply personal—she was born and raised in the neighborhood, is a proud graduate of the City University of New York, and a licensed tour guide.
